The most common route from LAX out to Palm Springs/Palm Desert is going to be the 10 East3, and while I believe there is some minor road work going on between the 15 and 215 freewways, it did not cause any delays for me last Friday. Traffic is going to be your worst enemy on this road trip!!! Depending on your timing and driving style, expect anywhere from 2 to 4 hours.
As far as what not to miss, there are very few "must do's." You'll be passing Ontario airport, an Indian casino or two, an outlet shopping area or two, and a classic bit of Americana: the giant road side dinosaurs from Pee Wee's first movie and others.

Agreed - not much "must do" on the way. Couple routes - take the 105E from the airport to the 605N to the 10E. Doesn't have as much traffic as 405N to 10E. Or an alternate is 105E to 110S to 91E to 61 to 10E. Probably either way is about the time. Time of 2-4 is accurate depending on when you leave LAX. You bringing Judi w/ you on this trip?

Tell Judi I said hi. I should know in a few weeks about my Chicago trip & will let you two know. Not sure when your PS trip is & if I'm around, but if so, you're always welcome to stop by my place at the beach. I'm 10 minutes from LAX. PS - Looks like some more of us are getting together in London in a few weeks. Good luck w/ the drive to PS - may you avoid rush hour & delays. Cheers.

took 3 going out, leaving LAX at 3pm on a Friday.
Took 1 1/2 on the way back, Sunday at leaving PSP at 10am, but was driving 85mph.
