Maybe all my research for my China trip will help. I had planned all this for last fall and the cruise from Beijing to Bangkok was cancelled due to SARS. I am currently booked for the cruise November 2004 with a two week land vacation in China prior to the cruise.
I am going to Chengdu to see the world's largest panda research center. I am spending two days in the mountains, hoping to see a panda in the wild. The Chinese tour agency http://www.chinahighlights.com/ has day tours for relatively little money. I believe there are also some ruins in the Chengdu area.
I am staying at the Sheraton Chengu Lido. Booked it off the SPG website. Looked much better than the hotel the tour agency wanted to put me up at. If I can be of more assistance, feel free to email.
