Dear HT experts,
I am trying to decide what is a convenient hotel in Taipei... any recommendations!
Just found a few threads, but want to see if you have any update information...
I guess I want a hotel that is closed to the subway system...
Thanks,
Carfield

Grand Hyatt is very good. But if you wish to better that - only 1 hotel in Taipei can do this - try The Sherwood.

The hotel with the best name;
The Lai Lai Sheraton
Any new suggestions for those who recently traveled to or live in TPE? I am looking for more or less of a value hotel in downtown. Can't afford a Grand Hyatt or Ritz Carlton, yet! What are some good ones that are also close to public transportation? Thanks in advance.

I've got family and spent a bunch of time in Taipei, there's more value hotels in East Taipei. West Taipei tends to be glitzier and more expensive. The hotels in E. Taipei tend to be lesser known or European brands. It's an older area (with lots of character!), but there's a couple of hotels in the ZhongShan N Rd area that are also close to the the MRT station.

I have enjoyed several stays at the Riviera Hotel. Very nice staff there!
As far as East TPE vs West TPE, which side is safer? How safe is downtown TPE? What about public transportation in TPE? What's available? Buses, subways, trolleys? Thanks in advance.

I can tell you're from LA & Philly even without seeing your Location. :D There is no "unsafe side" in the US sense in TPE, and the subway (MRT) is the best way to get around.

That's good to know! In many large metropolitan areas anywhere (not just the US), there are sections where even the locals have to be extra careful. By the way, what's the best way, in terms of cheapest as well as the fastest, to get from TPE to downtown? Any place you reccomend for good local foods? Thanks in advance.

Debating between Sheraton Taipei and Westin. My meetings are at the Convention Center. From the city map it seems like the Westin isn't that far by MRT. Can anyone provide an estimate of transit time?
Thanks

From discussion in the Starwood forum it is clear that the Sheraton is still undergoing major renovation, which may influence your choice.
The cheapest way to get to downtown from TPE is by airport bus - buy tickets in the arrival hall, making sure you get the right route. The quickest is taxi.

Thank you for the info on airport transportation. My question was more re: the transit time from the Westin to the Convention Center by MRT, and is there any difference re: Sheraton.
