I've got enough miles to get us to Singapore on SQ but am trying to find a place onward to go to that will make everyone happy. We have been to Asia before many years ago and are now looking for someplace to visit with our 15yr old. We would be traveling in August which I realize is not the best, weatherwise. Is there anyplace that one of you could recommend that wouldn't be absolutely sweltering and rainy but still be interesting for an active, sightseeing vacation? Wouldn't mind doing 3days or so at a beach resort, but not longer. Thanks!

Well for the beach, you could do Phuket in Thailand, or hit Da Nang in Vietnam. But for the most interesting spot, hit Cambodia. Do both Angkor Way (Siem Riep) and Pnomh Peng. You'll never forget what you see there.

August is not the best time for Phuket,Thailand (rainy season).

I would recommend in terms of weather:

Closest beach-destination is the lovely malaysian island Pulau Tioman or other surrounding islands 100km northwest of Singapore. Access with bus via Mersing or airplane.
Best hotel below, but not as cheap and high service standard as other malaysian hotels.

(site with map and airplane-scedule)

Other top destination for August is the indonesian island Bali.
Asia at is best!
Great nature, lot of temples, nice people and nice beaches.
Here you can find a lot of western hotelchains.

I would actually like to find a place to go from Singapore that would have great snorkeling for my husband and interesting sightseeing for my son and I. We have been to Bali already so maybe somewhere in Thailand? Also would like a really nice place to stay with great food. Again, this would be for August so don't know if there is anyplace where the weather would be ok for snorkeling and sightseeing. Thanks for any advice!

Phi Phi Island, Thailand. It takes a day of travel to and from, but it was the best vacation of my life! Forget the snorkeling, for about $100, you can get the scuba "lite" course and do two ocean dives. It was incredible!!
