I'm wondering if anyone knows about the Singapore MRT debit like cards one can get to pay for fares on Singaporean public transport. I have a full 4 days in SIN and plan on doing a lot of hopping about the place (not to mention the trips to and from the airport for the mileage runs) yet cant seem to find any info on how one goes about getting one?

I found the site for the visitors card - but that was 45 bucks for only 10 bucks worth of transport fares - is there an alternative ... I presume there must be as i recall reading somewhere on ft that for a single trip one had to pay a refundable deposit of a dollar for the travel card - but I cant find that post now that I'm looking for it ... so any info would be appreciated.

Also can lah. All MRT stations sell ez-link cards which can be used on all transport. They cost $15 for $7 worth of travel credit (incl. $3 refundable deposit), and you can charge them up more later. Note that, once you've got the card, paying by ez-link is 10-15% cheaper than paying cash (and a lot less hassle!).

The card deposit used to be entirely refundable, but a $5 charge was added this month since people were buying stacks of spare cards... http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/rolleyes.gif

I found this website, which belongs to the MRT company and there are only 3 types of travel tickets.

Check it out: http://www.smrtcorp.com/smrt/index_trips.htm

Actually, www.transitlink.com.sg (http://www.transitlink.com.sg) will give more information. Go to "Product and Services" and click on the "EZ Link" button.

Post another message here if you have more question. I am in Singapore.

Do Not, Do Not buy the S$45.00 visitors card. You will not recoup the cost in discounts. Just buy the card described above and cash it out when you leave. Singaporeans tend to speak English with an American accent. The card is available at the ticket booths at the MRT stations.

Simple and easy. Oh yes, do not look for a slot to insert the card, just pass it over the bullseye reader at the turnstile or in front of the little reader on the buses. Don't forget to swipe it upon leaving the MRT or a bus.
