Can anyone recommend their favorite comprehensive and in-depth guide book to Bali? Thanks.

What sort of travel books do you like for other places? There are a wide range of books for Bali from the Lonely Planet/Rough Guide/Moon end of the spectrum to Fodor's.

Before you go you should at least read through several guide books on Bali. Also, one with pictures might be good to take with you since the old saying is right for Bali that a picture tells a thousand words. You can obtain significant information online for the book websites and some travel agencies as well as general Bali websites.

Bali is the cover story in the issue of National Geographic Traveler that just hit the stands.

Three trips to Bali in the past three years, and now in business with sourcing there. My favorite guidebook is the DK Eyewitness Guide to Bali & Lombok. It has extensive cultural information, good maps, lots of photos and illustrations. The other "best" cultural information guide is the several years old Knopf Guide to Bali.

Knopf and Eyewitness are "pretty" guides, and I own both. I like EW, but I have found that they tend to leave a lot off, which is why I will choose Knopf if I have a choice. Look at the Paris guide, and you will understand if you have been there. I seem to remember the Marais as being considered "further afield", which it is not. The same glossing over is done in some of the other locales as well, but otherwise it's great and highly recommended. Probably one of the most useful for Bali for me, though, was the Footprint guide for Indonesia. The maps are reasonably accurate, and most of the places in the island are covered in some way or another.
