I will be staying in Beinjing for a few days in November and would like to get a car and driver to maximize my sightseeing and for a trip out to the great wall with complete flexibility where time is concerned. Does anyone know of a company with reliable (and safe)cars and drivers who can speak English?

FYI I found a good one for my stay in Shanghai:Jinjiang Automobile Service Co., Ltd where you can rent an 8 seat Merc minibus for about $100 US a day (10 hours).

Also I plan to stay at the Grand (Beijing Hotel, is this now a Hyatt?) due to its proximity to the Forbidden city where I hope to spend allot of time. The rates I have found are about $200 US for a room with Forbidden city view. Is this about right or can they be found for less? My guide book (Cadogan 2000 edition) says that they shouldn't be more than $100 (unless it is the St Regis)

Email me if you're still looking for a car & driver in PEK -- I have a number of good hook-ups and will be in Beijing myself during your visit. In November, you should be able to get in the Hyatt for quite a bit less than $200 (you mean the Wang Fu Jing Hyatt, right?). However, for the sake of mobility, I strongly suggest you stay out closer to the 3rd ring road. IMO, anything from the China World on up to the Kempinski is ideal, but the St. Regis or the Swiss might not be a bad move if you want to remain close to the Forbidden City.
