Has anyone taken the rail trip called "The Ghan" through central Australia? If so, was it worth while? What would the scenery be like in late June, early July?

Welcome to FT

Suggest you do a search. This has been discussed before and you will get the most information finding that discussion.

Also there is a VCR tape available that showed on Public television about the trains in Australia, this one being premier in the amount of coverage.

Personally I believe it is a poor way to see Australia, and an even poorer way to spend valuable time. My two friends that did this trip found it facinating for a short time then boring for most of the rest. Expensive and undisclosing of sites to be seen.

Train buff, and the video mentioned above, have nothing but praise for this "ride"

This was the primary reason we did not do the Ghan.

I actually LOVED "The Ghan" - although I am a fan of rail travel.

There is something quite surreal about sitting in the lounge car watching the scenery whilst partaking of the contents of a bottle of chardonnay.

The Ghan, being a 24 hour journey from ADL to ASP (or vice-versa) is well worth the trip, and I would splash out for first class (Gold Kangaroo, I think they call it).

If you have a spare A$12,000, you can hire a fully catered private carriage which hooks on to the Ghan or the Indian Pacific...
