For those of you who have been to Fiji lately, are there any remaining problems. Could problems arise at any time? Or has something truly changed to end the potential violence? Does it matter what island you are on? thanks

Fiji is completely safe. Even at the height of the coup, it was safe (safer than most US cities, for example). Three orders of magnitude safer than Indonesia or Philipines (you get the idea).

When was Fiji unsafe?? Do you mean during the period when one guy got offended that a certain member of his family was not invited to a certain weekend cookout? http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/smile.gif That's what politics in Fiji is all about! There is no violence towards tourists, just neighbours having a small fight. Too bad if these neighbours happen to have lavish villas in the centre of the capital. The rest is just made up by the foreign media. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/frown.gif

Apparently, you can get mugged in Nadi if you're particularly careless (e.g. no more dangerous than most places and a good deal safer than many).

Suva struck me as safe (I found myself walking between the Holiday Inn and the office at some interesting hours on a site trip in Feb - the worse that ever happend to me was friendly locals offering the local grog - Cava, I think).

Fijians are interesting people. I never did quite make them out.
