Had a tremendous five day trip on motorclycles around the Northern Shore of Lake Superior.
Started on Thursday night after work.
Rode the 5.5 hours to Eau Claire, WI all on major highways "to get going".
On Friday Morning, took route 53 north of Eau Claire to Duluth. 53 becomes very beautiful
after about an hour north of Eau Claire.
Once in Duluth, hook up with route 61. 61 goes all the way into Thunder Bay, ONT, along the northern shore of Lake Superior. There are some beautiful waterfalls all along this route. Especially like Gooseberry Falls.
Camped at Kakabeka Falls, Known as Niagara of the North, Kakabeka Falls is an awesome sight, The Kaministiquia River plunges nearly 40 m into a sheer-sided gorge, where
fossils 1.8 billion years old have been found in the layers of ancient sedimentary rock.
Had a campsite right on the river. The Falls are about a 35 minute ride west of Thunder Bay.
On Saturday, saw the following two parks.
Ouimet Canyon
A nature reserve with restricted access for day visitors, this sheer-walled canyon shelters rare Arctic-alpine plants along its floor, where snow often persists until late spring. These plants include mosses and lichens, encrusted saxifrage and Arctic pyrola. Two view-ing platforms on the rim give visitors a dramatic view of the spectacular gorge. Day use only.
Lake Nipigon Provincial Park
Towering cliffs, unusual green-black sand beaches, and carpets of wildflowers are among the spectacular natural features found in this provincial park, situated on the southeastern shores of Lake Nipigon.
The highway leading to the park from the Town of Nipigon passes through some of the most stunning scenery in Northern Ontario. Rugged diabase cliffs soar up to 170 metres along the highway which skirts the shores of Lake Helen, part of the Nipigon River system. The cliffs provide habitat for bald eagles and osprey. The rare double-crested cormorant nests on nearby islands in Lake Nipigon. Great blue herons and ruffed grouse are commonly seen in the park, along with snowshoe hare, beaver, fox, marten, lynx, deer, moose and black bears.
Sure enough, traffic was stopped in all directions as three moose decided to meander all over the highway.
Camped at below site on Saturday night. This camp site is located just north of Montreal River Harbor, ONT. Montreal River Harbor is located on the eastern side of Lake Superior.
Lake Superior Provincial Park. Agawa Bay. Campsite is on Lake Superior.
Our campsite was right on the beach. Northern Lights came out at night, even though there was a full moon.
Fell asleep to the sound of waves washing the shore.
On Sunday, saw the locks at Sault Ste. Marie. Which operate the difference in water level between Lake Superior and Lake Huron.
Rode slow through Petosky and ended up at Leelanau State Park. Leelanau is the peninsula just to the west of
Traverse City, MI.
on Monday saw Sleeping Bear Dunes, Silver Lake.
Then rode down the East Shore of Lake Michigan.
An Awesome 5 day ride.
