I just finished reading QuietLion's reoprt on his and Hunnybear's Seattle trip. Quite enjoyable reading (although I'm still waiting for that public debate on enforcement of antitrust laws http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif)

One thing piqued my curiosity: how do you get such fine VIP treatment at dining establsihments?

It is one of my goals in life to be treated well by everyone, and I don't think you should have to be an "elite" member or VIP to be treated that way, but such is the reality of "customer service" in this day and age.

So QuietLion, or anyone else, would you please share some of your secrets for dining VIP treatment?

Not everyone made it rich in the stock market or as a dot com.

Combine repeat visits with sincere kindness and friendliness. In time, you will get to know the staff and they will get to know you.

Assuming you have enough to pay your bill, $$$ doesn't really fit the equation.

Here are a few things that worked for me:

Send a note to the chef if you really enjoyed your meal. They're not used to getting fan mail. You'll probably get a nice reply, and just maybe get comped dessert or wine and a chance to meet the chef the next time you're in.

Attend food and/or wine events in your city so you actually get a chance to mingle with chefs and other foodies. I've struck up conversations with strangers at wine and food events who later turn out to be chefs, sommeliers or vineyard owners. Chance meetings like this can lead to interesting invitations.

Ask chefs where they like to eat out - and go!

Yes, and do this before the word franchise has destroyed the opportunity.
