TravelBuzz! - How many airlines have you traveled on?

ChanelCinq
Apr 28, 01, 12:58 pm
Now, I realize that for most of you this will not really apply. You are loyal to your one carrier. I worked for the airlines while going through college and had the opportunity to fly on many carriers for free. I got the idea from the thread How many countries have you been "in" (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum94/HTML/002315.html)

Below is my list of internationally based carriers in order of first time on the particular carrier.

1. Air France
2. British Airways
3. Mexicana
4. South African Airways
5. Virgin Atlantic
6. Lufthansa
7. Cubana
8. Air Canada
9. SAS
10. Air India
11. Malaysia Airlines
12. Thai Airways
13. Korean Air
14. Asiana
15. Air Afrique
16. Turkish Airlines
17. Condor
18. Aer Lingus
19. Air New Zealand
20. Ansett Australia
21. China Airlines
22. Garuda Indonesia
23. Saudi Arabian Airlines
24. Egypt Air
25. Air Malta
26. Morea Air
27. Aviandina
28. Aero Continente
29. Japan Airlines
30. Tropical Airways
31. Caribintair
32. Bangkok Airways
33. Vietnam Airlines

Several of the last ones are commuters within a country. Morea Air was in French Polynesia, Aviandina and Aero Continente in Peru, and Tropical Airways and Caribintair in Haiti.

Now the US domestic list based on first time on a carrier.

1. United Airlines
2. US Air (official name at the time)
3. American Airlines
4. America West Airlines
5. Continental Airlines
6. Alaska Airlines
7. Reno Air (extinct)
8. Southwest Airlines
9. National Airlines
10. Northwest Airlines
11. Delta Airlines

So a total of 44 airlines in total. What is your list?

Out of the above list there is no one airline that stands out as exceptional. However there is one that is rock bottom in terms of safety and service. I am sure you can guess which one it is.

ChanelCinq:

I, too, worked for an airline and was also an "airline brat" in my teens (after my mother married a TWA mechanic) so I had plenty of "interline" opportunities. Still, my list is not even close to being as extensive as yours and, I suspect, the lists of many FTers. But here it is...in no particular order:

TWA
American (and American Eagle)
Delta (and its shuttle and Delta Connection)
United (and United Express)
Continental (and Continental Express)
PeopleExpress (became part of Continental)
New York Air (didn't they become part of Continental too?)
North Central (merged with Southern to become Republic)
Republic (merged into Northwest)
Northwest
Ozark
Southwest
Allegheny (became US Air and, later, US Airways...also flew US Airways Shuttle)
PSA (didn't they become part of US Air?)
Piedmont (merged with US Air...how I miss Piedmont!)
Prinair (anyone remember this commuter carrier in the Caribbean?)
Pan Am
Western (merged into Delta)
Braniff (original incarnation)
Eastern (defunct)
Hawaiian
British Airways
QANTAS
Ansett Australia
Air New Zealand
Comair (prior to becoming part of the Delta Connection)
Wright Airlines
Vanguard
...plus an Italian carrier (the name escapes me) that operated an AZ code-share flight FCO-MXP

(edited to add Ozark)

Wow, I am impressed. Some of the US carriers I have never heard of. I am in my twenties so carriers like People Express (funny name) and Ozark were probably long gone before I started flying.

From the lists of airlines I can tell some of you have been to some very interesting places.

UAL Traveler do you primarily live in Thailand or the US?

bbinchi it was fun working for the airlines, wasn’t it. I loved hopping over to Paris on the week-ends. I would bring my books with me and go to places like Tahiti to study for a couple days.

BlondeBomber I didn’t catch the similar post, thanks for pointing it out.

Yes, it was fun...used my non-rev benefits a lot. But I don't miss all the unexpected nights I spent in STL (as an airline brat) and ATL (when I worked for DL)! It's great to have confirmed space and earn miles now. What a change, eh? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Favorite flight: DTWPEK on NW, upperdeck in J class. Great service (oddly enough) and the excitement of a 15+ hour flight when the route first began. 744 aircraft.

Best int'l service: KULSIN on SQ. One hour flight in F class. Sat next to an older gentleman with a bodyguard. Great food too. a343 aircraft was stunning.

Best int'l Y class: EWRROM on CO. 772 is the best plane in the sky. Adaquate pitch, good entertainment selection, decent food, best job of piloting I've ever seen. The landing was textbook perfect.

Favorite domestic first class: NW DC10, but never been in F on domestic 777 before. Love the openness of the cabin. Also, any 757 when boarding is behind the F cabin. a319 looks promising as well.

Worst domestic F class: Delta 767. Seats SUCK. Nuff said.

Best domestic Y class: NW a320 in seat 10a. Wide, wide, wide seat and great legroom.

Worst domestic Y class: Any 737, but America West 733 is TERRIBLE. Also, CO 735 is a real THIGH PINCHER. Delta 72S has the worst seat pitch I've ever seen. Never tried Sun Country DC10, but heard they put 10 across in coach! Ouch!

Most surprised: TWA MD80 flight from MSP to STL. Excellent service, surprising comfort, and enjoyable. Only comment card I ever filled out was for this flight.

Worst restroom: AirTran DC9 in F class. One way FLLPHL for $322 made it worthwhile though. Funniest pilots.

Best place to connect: MSP. No lie.

Hello FTers,

Great thread, it brings on many old pleasant and equally unpleasant memories.

Is Skywest still around, I flew them twice on a regional jet from SLC to PSC (Pasco, Richland, Kennewick) some years ago? They seemed to have their act together.

I wish that I had saved some of the Piedmont items such as tags, etc., however many of the FAs from the 1970s and the 1980s are still doing the same routes as US.

Cheers,

Va.SquireFlyer

my count is at 59 currently. not counting charter air lines, the ones i've flown on that i don't think i saw in prior posts are: air nauru, air cameroon, polynesian, air botswana, yugoslav, trans texas, air wisconsin, lada, austral, yemen?,bwia. the prior names may not be precise. having taken a few trips on adventure tours in past 30 yrs, i suspect that different air operators have been involved, but they probably aren't air lines. my list would be much shorter if my memory wasn't jogged by all the posts thanks

Hmmm...

In order of first time?

I think that would be...
Piedmont
Northwest
American
Southwest
US Airways
United (Express only, I've never flown their mainline)
Delta
Air Canada

The surprising part is that Delta falls so late, even though CHA is dominated by two DL Connection carriers.

2. Delta
3. United
4. United Shuttle
5. SkyWest/United Express
6. Alaska
7. American

9. US Air / US Airways

23. US Airways Express (Trans States)

I know a couple of these carriers are simply divisions of large majors but since they provide a different level of service I thought it was appropriate to list them separately.

I don't have a very long list yet, but I'm still young, and have plenty of time!

Domestic:
United
American
TWA
America West
Delta
USAir
Allegheny
Eastern
Ozark
some others I was probably too young to remember!

International:
a pathetically short list!
Finnair
Virgin Atlantic
British Airways

Now that I'm earning miles on AA, I'll be limited to oneworld airlines, but there are a few of those I'd like to add in the near future!

My list is nowhere near as impressive as most others here, but it's fun to try to remember the airlines I've been on, so I'll list them here. I am only in my twenties, but have flown on some long-gone airlines like Ozark and the first Frontier (on Convair 580s!!!)

Frontier (the original)
Ozark
TWA
Eastern
Delta
US Air
Continental
United
Northwest
Southwest
Air Midwest
Great Lakes Aviation (hands down the worst airline)
GP Express (anyone else know this airline?)
Japan Airlines
All Nippon
Japan Air System
Air India
Singapore Airlines
KLM
KLM UK
Lufthansa
Hawaiian
Virgin Atlantic

Strangely, I have never flown American Airlines!

Wow, I sure look like a mere novice compared to some of you, even through I've always been interested in airlines. Here are airlines I've flown, in no particular order:

1) United
2) Pan Am
3) American
4) Delta
5) ACA (as United Express)
6) Midwest Express
7) British Airways
8) US Air (back before they became US Airways)
9) Texas Air (before they got brought out by US Air)
10) Trans World Airlines

Guess I better get cracking on flying some more airlines. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/smile.gif
