I've just checked a few flights on the AN site, and well 01MAR was one of them.
There are none of the cheap flights available on 01MAR for MEL-SYD and a same day return.
However, the system acknowledged that & then found the next available flights at that particular fare (as well as showing the various fares & what is available for that fare bucket).
It really has to be one of the best booking engines personally http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Here are just a few booking classes for those interested (seeing they have suddenly become important at AN http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
The $77 Oneaway Runwaway is in L.
14 Day APEX is in W.
7 Day APEX is in T.
1 Day APEX is in V Class (web).
Full Economy is in Y.
Business Class is in C.

any particular reason why business class is now c instead of j?

Business class is C as AN has moved to the common Star Alliance format eg: C D for business, Y B H M Q V W for Y class - these are common throughout the alliance, then each carrier is allowed their own buckets for specials (eg: L T class).
And yes, the booking engine is smart, but to be fair QF's red-e-deals booking system has done the same thing for ages, but I do prefer the way AN's displays it with a red line, and a "select flights" link where you can see all options in the one window.
At the moment a same day return costs $352 (too much for my money) however you can purchase a $77 one way MEL-SYD on AN4 (beloved L class), then a one way SYD-MEL on QF (lots of N class available).
However I am going to wait till Monday as the current batch of cheap L class fares expire 24/2, and I am hoping they will extend validity of these fares after that, because there are L seats available.

Do you think that the schedule for March is final or will it be improved .I'm connecting to BNE at SYD from LAX on United and all I can get(that is anywhere near suitable) on Sunday 24/3 is either an 0855 or a 1205 departure. As my flight arrives in at 0740,the first is too close and I really don't want to wait until 1205! I do want to give AN II my business!

I'm curious. Ticketing through United should put your BNE connection on Qantas - assuming arriving flights are common ticketed (as outgoing flights are).

Hopefully when AN is finally worked out UA will go back to using AN and ticketing on them. I wonder if we'll ever see the UA49xx flights again?! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Brizvegas,
Thanks for that.
You are right except I am travelling on a Q class fare thru to Europe via the USA.UA will not include the BNE-SYD segments in the fare.

Brizvegas,
Can you tell me where to access these flights as I can't seem to get it on their internet site.
Thanks,

Star Alliance ET (Feb 16 update) shows:
AN226 dep SYD 0935a, arr BNE 1000a 320 (Snack)
AN234 dep SYD 1130a, arr BNE 1130a 320 (Snack)
I am looking at March 3, and that is the Tesna schedule, so should be correct.
It also just gave me the same results checking the AN schedule on their website. Perhaps you do not see it via the booking engine if there are no seats in the fare class you want?

Richard,
Thanks for that but I keep looking at the AN web site and cannot see any flights on sunday the 24 march between 0855 and 1205 from SYD to BNE.Maybe I'm looking at the wrong place!

Ozflier - how strange - I see that too, yet for 03 March and 10 March, those flights exist... but 17 and 24 March, they don't. Perhaps Tesna has decided the bookings are so crap they removed them from the schedule?
On another note, the booking engine now has a tab/field for "Ansett FF" number, but not for any other program. I suppose you'd have to call res and see if a * number could be put in, and if it would even work.

Richard,
Have you contacted UA about AN yet? Wonder if they know anything.
Was checking a few flights today & the agent was surprised to hear that L class is useless for FF points http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
Anyway, for those interested, here are all of Ansett's booking classes. You'll see why they don't like L class http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
Y B M K H Q V W T L S N
S & N are not being used at the moment, so L's the last. L can stand for lousy, last, etc class, for the time being http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
For those interested, you're nuts if you buy a $660 MEL-SYD Y class. Get the $480 K class - just as flexible.
All Ansett tickets are now instant purchase - you must pay when you buy, irrespective of whether you buy on the phone.
Interestingly there are some fares on the phone which aren't available on the net, like the $181 MEL-SYD T class (incl all taxes) - no APEX reqds, just Sat nt or 3 nts.
Cheers,
Justin

I won't bother talking to UA until after the sale goes through and things are more confirmed. Right now, AN claims to not be in Star Alliance, despite what Mark Korda said in the Creditor's meeting, so who really knows? One thing is for sure, UA wouldn't....
Next Friday is looking weird.. best option I can see for now is $77 MEL-SYD L class, return in H class fare for $187 or so. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

What fare is in H class?

The H class fare is one of those oneway fares, but not a cheapie. It's the same rate as DJ's fully flex fare, but the AN one is non refundable.

Ahh,
Where do you find it? The only H class fare an agent could find for me was a Secondary Student, 50% off ticket.

Well the H fare was there when I posted, but now it's gone http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif It was $184+taxes one way SYD-MEL, think it was listed as a 1 day adv purchase one way fare (could have been a web fare).
I think Friday is in trouble with the availability and pricing. MEL-SYD is okay, but SYD-MEL is a shocker. Lots of 0's showing up in the availability, which seems odd.
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif
I vote for a special B fare that is 10% of full Y, call it the "Ansett fanatic fare" and make it valid March 1 http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/tongue.gif
