In a webcast given at JP Morgan Airline Conference, (http://www.americawest.com/aboutawa/publicrelations/aa_ir_webcast.htm) Doug Parker said that HP would not have DirectTV anytime soon. He said the costs were now too prohibitive.
In the speech he also had a few other interesting things to say. HP has a "record amount of cash on hand". He said the decision to replace 737's and 757's was a "couple of years off", and he also said that 25% of flyers are "Phoenix" flyers, meaning their flights are originating or terminating in PHX (in contrast to passengers connecting in PHX).

"record amounts of cash on hand" Hmmm. Interesting. Of course attributing to that are zero inflight meals in Y and you know what in F.
I think I saw Doug Parker last week at Costco in Scottsdale. He was loading a HP semi-trailer up with 28 pallets of hot pockets.
The fun never ends...lol

One encouraging thing he mentioned was...
"We will need to add airplanes to grow. What we add really depends on what mfgrs are willing to do, and what's out in the used aircraft world."
Hopefully that means HP can get some 738/739's in the mix.

I agree it would be nice to see some -800 and -900 aircraft in their fleet. I think it's about time to retire those old -200's!

Yes, those 200's are gross. The 300's are not much better, but I realize that HP can dump that many planes that fast.
I'm hoping the 757's stay around for a while since HP has no interest in the widebody planes.

The 732s are being retired as they come up for heavy maintenance checks. They'll all be gone by the end of 2004.
The 757s will be in the fleet until 2007 (or maybe 2008). HP renegotiated the 757 leases last year and had to extend them in order to get better rates.

Do you know if the lease still prevents HP from flying 757's on intl routes?

I didn't know there was such a provision.

I believe someone mentioned it on USAviation.com. That's why you never see 757's on Mexico routes.
