America West FlightFund (Discontinued Program) - Dishonest Request for Information by AWA

Dear America West, You are not being honest on your web site on your member profile login. You do not need the following information for password recovery and it is very disturbing you are gathering the following under the guise of “password recovery”: My date of birth! Mother’s maiden name, number of siblings. The favorite color question is fine but the DOB is most likely being used for other reasons than you disclose.

What do you think they're doing with the information, selling it to Al Qaeda?

I PROMISE THIS DATA IS TO VALUABLE AND TEMPTING TO JUST SIT WITHOUT BEING PUT TO SOME USE OTHER THAN THE USE STATED BY AMERICA WEST. THIS IS WRONG.
Besides being able to use this information for marketing purposes and identifying accounts America West could also be testing something similar to Capps II. Jet Blues private passenger data for millions of passengers including social security numbers and dates of birth were released on the Internet because they released the data to a private company for a CAPPS II test.

I'm pretty sure the Government already knows my date of birth and Social Security Number.

Why would Jet Blue have their passengers social security numbers? HP no doubt knows a fair amount about me, but they don't know that. Passport number, maybe, but not SS#.

I can obtain your social security number using your name and date of birth without violating any laws and often without spending a dime.
My original point in my first post, which was WELL BEFORE the Jet Blue fiasco, was that the personal information America West collects would be used for purposes other than stated by America West.

Most of you are missing the point...You open personal information door a crack and anyone can obtain a wealth of private information about you. More than any one of you could imagine. I could blow your mind (Seinfeld, Kramer!) with just your name and DOB.
I am not a privacy nut I just like companies being honest when they ask for this stuff so at least they are accountable. I can just see the demograhic marketing person at HP ignore the DOB data when he is trying to figure who is traveling. Yeah password retrival that's the ticket! (Saturday Nite live)
Also this NYSE listed company provided the cross matches for the flyers social security numbers:
Acxiom Corporation SYMBOL ACXM

I have to agree to the original thread here; there is no valid reason for HP to ask for ALL of those identifying questions. I watched on as a friend was signing up for their program the other day and we were both amazed...
here to, not a big privacy nut-case... but it certainly makes me wonder ... "but why are they asking all that"

So now another of our rights has been reduced to a "-nut" phrase?....scary
gun nut, religious nut, now privacy nut...Are there any freedoms that we can demand without being labled nuts?
Not directing my cynicism to the posters above, just to popular culture and media in general. makes me sad

You must know me! Tempe Arizona is not far from being Lakewood Ohio where the Eminent Domain law is being abused. The Tempe Arizona developers play very tricky games and some stand very close behind the Mayor http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I knew someone had to chime in, given the door Centurion left open. My former mayor, but I hear he keeps busy.

As did several other airlines. However the data that was shared had nothing to do with data collected for web site access. It was simply a set of PNR data from the reservations system. Your mother's maiden name, for example, would not be included in that PNR.
