America West FlightFund (Discontinued Program) - F upgrades for Silver

Just about to make Silver with America West. I know the is the bottom of the line, but first time for me to have status with any airline.

I see that it is possible for a silver to upgrade to F. I am sure it is only after all of the above levels have had the opportunity, but how and when would I request this?

As a silver you are entitled to a complimentary upgrade, if available, on the day of the flight. A computer program runs at midnite ( AZ time as far as I remember) and upgrades you if space is available. If it doesnt , you can call the Flightfund dept then or later and request it

So when I check in at Sky Harbor and get my boarding pass at the kiosk, if they are going to upgrade me do I find out then or do I find out at the gate (they call my name) Let me know I just got silver status and am flying Phx to San Diego in 10 days

If you have already been upgraded, the kiosk will check you in to a First Class seat. If not, it will offer to upgrade you if there are seats available.

I would not wait until getting to the airport to check on my upgrade.

I know that with the Silver Challenge (or whaever it is called) and now the discount on F seats there will be less upgrades for us silvers then ever before.(Luckily I am steadily on my way to gold!). If my upgrade does not clear around midnight I CALL and ask for it. A couple of times the rep has said, "Oh there is one seat but it is blocked for revenue." But each time they said that, they tried to give me an upgarde anyway and it took!

In the past six months I have gotten upgrades 80% of the time, though I think I fly off-peak mostly.

(And ditto re the "take food with you"...but please, no pastramis, pepperonis or other smelly stuff! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif )
