Both on tickets purchased entirely on-line, as well as through the reservation center, the gate agent always take the bigger portion of my boarding pass, and gave me the stub.
I (think) I have noticed that some of the other passengers' boarding pass were just scanned. Edited to add: are there boarding passes with barcodes printed or magnetic strip on the back that gets scanned at the gate?
