I've never stayed there myself, but a recommendation from a NY-area travel agent I know from another list:
Tribeca Grand Hotel
Nice hotel. Rooms are a decent size and the service here is better than at its sister hotel the Soho Grand. My only quibble is its location. It's not ideal but it's not terrible. You're really on the border between two great neighborhoods -- Tribeca and Soho. Unfortunately you have to cross horrible Canal Street with horrific traffic (and daytime, horrific crowds of shoppers -- very commercial street) to get uptown. But you can also walk to great restaurants & shopping in Tribeca, Soho, Chinatown, Little Italy and the Village.

Unless someone is doing business in Lower Manhattan, I'm not sure why they'd want to stay in that neighborhood. I've passed the hotel many times but have never been inside. It looks fine, but it just depends where one wants to be during the day. If it's downtown, it's probably one of the best places for convenience.
I work a couple of blocks away.
Great restaurants in the area.
