I have made the comment on other board that CO is the only airline to declare bankruptcy and ultimately survive. Some folks have stated that America West also declared in the early 1990s and clearly has survived. Is this actually true? I know that things were very tenuous in the early 90s, but I do not recall it ever necessitating an HP bankruptcy.
America West ain't no stranger in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, but don't take my word for it.
From the Arizona Repulsive (http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/1205unitedqa-ON.html) Q. What are the odds of United surviving a bankruptcy filing?
A. Uncertain. Continental, America West and others survived bankruptcy; Eastern, Pan Am and Midway didn't. Said Jenkins: "If they make peace with labor, they will come out of Chapter 11 stronger than they've ever been. If they have any travel disruptions due to labor unrest, then they become the next Eastern Airlines."

America West filed for Chapter 11 in 1991, reemerging in 1994.
The same group that was behind the Continental rescue (Texas Pacific) Bonderman were behind AWA coming out of bankruptcy.
