America West FlightFund (Discontinued Program) - Upgrades to Mexico?

We may be flying Calgary to Mazatlan next year on America West or Alaska Airlines. Are there system wide (or equivalent) upgrades that can be purchased or obtained (?) somehow ? What fare classes could they be used on, and is it likely around Xmas time that they would be unusable anyway due to booking levels. Are they usable only for certain tiers of flyers ? Any other restrictions or thoughts that come to mind ??? Thanks.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that option. Although, it can get pretty pricey for two people traveling from Canada to Mexico.
