I'll be flying into HNL about 10:30 pm, and need to get back to the airport around 7:30 am the next morning. So I need somewhere to stay that's close to the airport. Prior posts suggest the choices are grim, but if you're forced to do it, what's the best choice?

I do not have any specfic advice for you except to note that the Waikiki area is only about 15-20 minutes away from HNL by car. It should not take you long to make the trip, especially considering that you are comming and going at times that would be minus most traffic. You should be able to find all kinds of places to stay in that area and not be all that far from the airport.
