A recent LV visitor (who is apparently a major monorail fan) got some good photos of the LV Monorail project:

They include a shot or two of what the new trains look like.

Did you know that the current monorail (between Bally's and MGM) uses 2 retired Disney Mark IV trains?

I did. The word would be "used", as the Bally-MGM is closed while they modify the track for the new trains. It will repoen in Jan 04.

Is the new train open for business? I'm wondering whether I can now use it to get from the LV Hilton to the strip. Where does it go and how much does it cost? Thx!

Thanks, Cleveland Flyboy, for the info. And welcome to Flyertalk!
If anyone has actually ridden the monorail, I'd love to read a Trip Report. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/smile.gif

I was just in Vegas and met with thye PR Manager for the Monorail. I have some great pictures that I'll post ASAP. They let me in a couple of the stations and the Maint and Operations Building. I was allowed to stand in one of the cars. It was very interesting.
No one outside of company employees has ridden the monorail yet. It has just entered the final testing phase. If you visit LV soon, you'll see the trains running from end to end. They appear to be on target for a March opening.

Are you serious? Naked steel I-beam girders. Rough concrete floors. Exposed light fixtures. Garish blue steel uncomfortable furniture and trash cans. I
s this finished? This is what the stations are going to look like?
These make an inner city Greyhound Bus station look downright homey, if not elegant.

These are some ugly stations. They make Brooklyn subway stations look nice (no offense to anyone from Brooklyn) .

Keep in mind that the trains will run every two minutes. Most people prob won't have enough time to even notice the station interior.
The exception will be the Convention Ctr station. Nextel is having the whole thing redone. It's going to be pretty wild. I've got some construction photos to post.

How come the monorail doesn't run down the middle of LVB?

Because a car would hit you when you get off the train?

I think the Strip hotels and the City of LV probably thought running the Monorail down the middle of the strip would have taken away the important casino walk-in trade that the casinos have depended on.
While no one will probably ever admit it, I also think the first phase was built primarily to help people get to/from the Las Vegas Convention Ctr efficiently.

Afraid so. I don't have a problem with delays that are safety. I would not want the system running until they felt it was as safe as they can make it.
I've waited this long, I'll wait a little longer.

Is there an anticipated date when the monorail will connect to the airport?

No. The next extension has been agreed on and has the financing lined up, but it's going downtown, not to the airport. The airport is in the long term plans but that probably means 2010+...

Not that I like to see people out of work, but LV would be a much better place with less taxicabs. The airport connection will do this.
