I'm thinking about taking my boyfriend on a surprise trip to Vegas for his birthday at the end of October. Is that usually a good time of year for deals, or is it high season because the weather has cooled off some?

Southwest has MDW-LAS for $175. Should I jump on that now, or will it still be possible to get fares as good or better closer to the time?

Last.. for hotels, I notice that a lot of them have deals through September. Am I correct in assuming that deals for October will be up relatively soon?

Take the airfare now. SW sells out those seats fast. Check ATA from MDW also. You may not get direct flights later, or only red-eye's will be left. October is a little more busy than the hot summer.

Thanks for the advice... I jumped on the fare, which was $170 after taxes. I'm not going to tell him about it until the morning of his birthday, and we'll go that afternoon.

I'll worry about the hotel later. There are some decent prices now, but I'm hoping for some deals similar to what's out there for summer, a little closer to the time.

October hotel rates are usually fairly high because its one of the busier convention months. You might miss most of them because your going at the end of October though. I'd expect the rates to drop a bit. You can always book somewhere now and if the rates drop, you can phone them up and have your rates lowered. Most hotels have policies where you can cancel or change up to 48 hours before your arrival.

Have been to LV 7 times in the last 2 years. Cheapest times to go are the week of Thanksgiving and the week of Christmas. But since that is not an option, you should download Travelaxe, available at www.travelaxe.com. (http://www.travelaxe.com.) It will search websites for the dates that you want and present it in a very easy to view format.

PM me if you need to know anything else

Book a refundable hotel now since the price may not go down. Then check periodically for better deals.

Expedia often has good deals but they are usually non-refundable.

I made a reservation for Luxor, which is a little more than I want to spend ($350 for a Wed, Thur, Fri... ok, but not cheap), but it sounds great. Flamingo and Exclaibur had great rates, but Excalibur gets panned, and Flamingo sounds nice, but not themed enough for what I want.

So, I'll keep a lookout for better rates, but if we stay at Luxor, I'm sure we'll enjoy it.

Excellent job on the airfare. There are very few deals into Vegas at that time of year as slots are limited. I usually end up paying southwest full fare from OAK, which runs $220 RT.

Cannot agree with your choice of the Luxor. The rooms are small and the hotel is just not all that nice. You would be better off taking your bf to a fun hotel like the Hard Rock or the Mandalay. You might also want to treat the Luxor as your backup reservation and bid for a room on ebay. Some people have ended up with incredible rooms at the Venetian for the same price that you would pay for an average room on the strip. See www.biddingfortravel.com (http://www.biddingfortravel.com) for advice.

Actually, now my reservation is for The Orleans. The Halloween Ball is being hosted at the Orleans arena, so it'll be great to be able to get home quickly and easily after that.

I completely agree with Boraxo's assessment of your hotel choice. Hard Rock, Palms and Mandalay have a fun vibe and atmosphere. BTW, the Orleans is heavy with locals, not that there is anything wrong with that, but if you want a better party scene, stick with Boraxo's suggestions.

Before I knew about the Halloween Ball, I definitely wanted to stay on the strip. Now, though, I think it'll be great to be at the Orleans, which is the host hotel for the event. Plus, I got a great rate ($205 total for Sat, Sun, and Mon nights, including taxes, two dinner buffets and two breakfast buffets).

FYI, there is a potential Flyertalk gettogether in Vegas on Holloween weekend, see: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum95/HTML/003621.html
