Las Vegas - Family hotel suggestion?

A friend is travelling to Las Vegas (part of a long southwestern road trip) and needs a hotel for 3 nights, beginning on a Thursday. Kids are young, so a nice pool area is important. Being on or near the strip is not important, as they will have a rental car.
Any suggestions of nice, affordable places?
TIA.

A one bedroom suite at one of the Hilton Grand Vacation Clubs would be an excellent place to stay for a young family, particularly the one at the Flamingo. High quality, good value, nice pools and mom/dad and kids get their own space. Check Travelaxe.com for lower rates than the HGVC website. http://www.hgvc.com/HGVC_resorts/resorts/FlamingoHilton_NV.html Milepoint.com has particularly good deals for HGVC.
If budget is the primary concern, as far as traditional casino hotels on the Strip, Stardust http://www.vegas.com/resorts/pools/stardustpool.html and Sahara (Tangiers Tower) http://www.vegas.com/resorts/pools/saharapool.html have relatively low weekend rates with fairly good quality. Off Strip, I bet a $35/night Priceline bid in the Convention Center zone would work for something along the lines of Courtyard by Marriott on Paradise Ave. Nice rooms and a small but acceptable pool.
Other top values off strip are the Orleans http://www.vegas.com/resorts/pools/orleanspool.html and Terrible's http://www.vegas.com/resorts/pools/terriblespool.html
I wouldn't recommend Excalibur or Circus Circus, the most popular with families with young children, as they're overwhelmed with kids and the quality is low. Excalibur is very centrally located though.

The Sahara is right next to a big water park if they are old enough for water slides.

"Affordable" is such a tough term to work with. Providing a budget range is also helpful.
MGM Grand is family friendly and has a giant pool complex.
