As a new flyer on America West I have a question on the upgrade process.
1. Does the process work like CO where they automatically upgrade me? Or do I have to call and request within the upgrade windows?
2. If there is no upgrade in the window should I call and ask for the upgrade.
Thanks in advance for your help in this matter.

It almost always works for me (coming through with automatic first class upgrades, though I've never received an e-mail.

Definitely call. The kind folks in the reservation center will gladly assist you should there be an eligible seat available for an upgrade.

TransWorldOne thanks for the quick reply.
I always call.Even if seats are available the auto-upgrade only works about 50% of the time for me.I have never once received an upgrade notification via email.

The auto upgrade is sometimes dicey on certain flights. I've had no problem with it on short fligts, but you never get an e-mail. My last e-mail was in early 2001. Call within your window and ask if you've been upgraded or not. They can do it manually with no problem.
Keep in mind that some routes are hard to upgrade on. I know of at least 2:
PHX-EWR and back - on peak days
LAS-PHX - the last flight of the day
(this one's always full of
deadheaders on their way back to
PHX for the night)
If you have an e-ticket you can go to the HP website and retrieve your reservation. If you were upgraded within the appropriate window, it will show the upgraded seat in your PNR.
