Las Vegas - A note about TravelAxe and hotel web sites

I was researching rates for some of my readers and made an interesting discovery. TravelAxe does not always check the actual hotel web sites. This could be because the web site is not "friendly" toward products like TravelAxe, I don't know.

I did notice that occsaionally, I found lower rates at the actual hotel web site.

While I'll continue to suggest use of TravelAxe, I'll also suggest checking the hotel web site as well (if TravelAxe does not).

I never knew they checked the hotel website.I just assumed they only checked the hotel discounters etc. I always checked the hotel websites on my own.

I think a good rule with ANY travel website (travelaxe, expedia, orbitz, etc.) would be to perhaps check them first, get the lowest price you can find, then doublecheck that against the direct website (air, car, hotel) and see how it compares. If it's the same, better, worst case maybe just a little more, you might consider booking directly instead. Unlike the travel site/agency is offering some special discounted rate, I think it's usually better to book direct than through a 3rd party, especially when any changes or cancellations are involved.

Nor do they usually (ever?) check travelocity/yahoo travel. I've found more competitive rates, or unlisted hotels there.

Checking Travelocity shouldn't be an issue, as TravelAxe checks HRN (which provides Travelocity's proprietary rates) as well as the published GDS prices.

Try a comparison, espcially for someplace like Oakland--I get hotels in travelocity that don't even show up in travelaxe. I still like it, but I find it's not nearly the complete picture they claim.
