I am curious whether or not you earn miles on award travel.

hahahaha lol. I think I asked DL that question many years ago when I was new to the FF programs, and they laughed at me too. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Thanks so much for so many intelligent replies. Yes, I was serious. I am new to the frequent flyer program and have never used my miles before today. I tried to find this information on the America West website and wasn't able to. When I booked my reward flight online today, it gave me every indication that I was earning miles which I thought you weren't able to.

So, I came here and asked a simple question of people who I thought would know.

No, you do not. There is no FF program in the industry which allows you to earn miles on free tickets.

I guess the only thing even close I can think of is, at a Hyatt you can get a stay credit for a free night if you purchase some incidentals at the hotel. No such luck with any airline.

No, but if your FF number gets put in your record by a gate agent you will receive credit. It never hurts to ask <g>

I think your frequent flyer number will be in the record if you use an award. The computer is smart enough to look at the booking class and not give you credit for award booking.

Of course, if there is a flight irregularity and they rebook you with the wrong class, then you can get credit.

That you won't. That applies to paid tickets only.

Question is a good question. Once upon a time, you did earn miles on award tickets.

When most airlines began FFP's, mileage earned was based on cabin class, not fare basis.

A little birdie told me that - HP reservation employees are "trained" not to put the FF number in so the miles don't post - If it ends up in the reservation the miles credit

Well I have only cashed in one reward ticket - but I can promise you though my number was in - and I managed to get an upgrade to FC ( thanks to a marvelous agent in ORD), no miles posted ( and I sure would not expect them to)

If the account number gets entered, does this mean the EUA will upgrade the ticket when the window opens?

NO EUA did not upgrade - and phone agents said no - but smiles and or chocolates for check in agents sometimes work wonders http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
