the handspring website has said "available soon" for months now (re: t-mobile as a provider)...does anyone have any firm intel when they will be available?

I checked a couple places on the web and they seemed to have them but be sold out. One place said they were getting units in at the end of the December. Another said in one place they had a few but when you try to order it says it is sold out. You might have to look around a bit but they seem to be out there. I have seen some people using them.

I wanted a sprint one (non gsm) for the wife for the holiday, I started a month ago and couldn't get one.

There are several GSM ones on E-bay, one unlocked closing in an hour or so for over $700, another AT&T one (probably locked) closing in three hours for $430 right now, another coming up from AT&T in 4 hours for $465, etc.

Just order the Cingular version off the Handspring website. It's unlocked and works just peachy on T-mobile (I'm using it on T-mobile now). In fact, it comes preconfigured with T-mo's internet settings so you don't even need to do any configuration on it beyond setting up your Email. GPRS/MMS is all already set up! Slip in your SIM and go.

> What do you give for a zip code to get
> past the "gatekeeper"?

I figured it out....it only needed a generic zip code in a Cingular coverage area...

Thanks for the tip Kanebear...I really enjoy your informative posts

Was this the $700 model, or did you have to start service?

The $700 model. I'm not sure if the Cingular model is locked when subsidized or not.

Handspring (http://www.handspring.com/products/communicators/treo600_overview.jhtml) is now accepting pre-orders for either the T-Mobile Treo 600 or a generic, unbranded version. They are offering an upgrade price of $399, and if you search on E-Bay, there are a few serial numbers left for sale.
