Travel Technology - IBM T40 Prices

Hey everyone,
I did some searching through Yahoo and I came up with some very nice prices for the IBM T40 laptops.
For around $1500 you can buy a T40 with a 1.3 ghz processor and 256MB of Ram. Now if I bought one I would buy a 256MB chip from Crucial memory to boost the memory to 512MB. Just wondering if these T40s are real and not just some crap people are selling. I always thought T40s were $2000+.
Thanks

I've had really good luck with rated merchants. Without a rating, it's pretty much a crapshoot. a couple of caveats:
1) Make sure the system has the full IBM factory warranty (i.e., it's not a refurb being advertised as new)
2) Be sure and check the shipping charges. Some of the lowballer scum advertise a really attractive price and then whack you with something like $100 shipping & handling.
Oh yeah, if you don't mind a refurb, IBM has an ebay store where they sell laptops, but it's hit or miss with inventory:

I read your other thread late and didn't really want to get into it, but I did wonder where you got the idea a T40 couldn't be had for the price range you were looking for. You can buy one direct from IBM for $1,500 if you want, no concerns about quality there:
T40 2378D1U direct from IBM (http://www-132.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=8615550&storeId=1&langId=-1&categoryId=2049168&dualCurrId=73&catalogId=-840)
Any reputable merchant will sell you the same thing though, and in my experience, IBM can be a bit slow to ship so you might want to buy it from someone else anyway. For instance, Ecost has the same laptop for $1,457.52:
2378D1U from Ecost (http://www.ecost.com/ecost/shop/detail.asp?dpno=241762)
Ecost is a good merchant, and that's actually who I bought my T40 from ...

A search of FT yields: I am very pleased with my 2 week old IBM T40 ThinkPad (model 237319U) as it has both the single-finger toggle and a touchpad. You can use either/both interchangeably. It goes 5 lbs and is exactly 1 inch think with built-in Wi-Fi. I bought it directly from www.ibm.com (http://www.ibm.com) with my stockholders discount for $1549 incl free 2 day UPS delivery and separately purchased a 512meg RAM module from www.crucial.com (http://www.crucial.com) for $129 (IBM wanted $275) and installed it in less than 5 minutes. It now has 768meg RAM awaiting any number crunching and can max out at 2028meg if need be. It comes with 14.1, 256meg RAM, 30 GB HDD, removable CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo etc and a 3 year warranty. A very nice deal.

The only differences that I have been able to note are: 1. Top chip speed increase from 1.6 GHZ to 1.7 GHZ; and 2. A hard drive protection unit that protects the platters when there is movement of the laptop.
I have a 1.5 GHZ T40 and think it's great.
