That is still a rumor. We'll find out on Jan 6th if it is true though.

So it will be ~5 GB?

If it is as well-designed as the iPod, I will be the first in line to buy two.

5gb iPod would be sexy. And $100 is a magic price.

Um... Wasn't one of the 1st gen ipods a 5Gb model? Though the resale value appears to be closer to $200 than $100.

Yes, but the original one used a mini harddisk, the new possible upcoming ipods use flash memory, nowadays much cheaper..

The rumor is that the cheap version of the iPod will still use the same 1.8 inch hard drive, but have a lower feature set.

Apple is also expected to release a smaller version in the 2-4 gb range using the new 1 inch sized hard drives from toshiba and hitachi. This would be the midpriced option.

IIRC (which is probably wrong), they were like $300 for the 5gb models. Sub $200 is the magic number.

Sub $200 is a great deal, but right around $200 seems to be the going rate on ebay.

Lotta rumors flying. I saw one source say flash memory, but that didn't make sense to me with the 2-4GB capacity. Flash memory is cheaper now, sure, but 2-4GB capacity of flash memory doesn't go with the $100 rumored price point. Heck, it doesn't go with even a $200 price point. So I don't see any coherence to this until we see the device. Only then will we know the capacities, capabilities and prices.

I agree, however it wouldn't be the first time they pull a stunt like this, Apple was selling wireless cards (the original Airport cards) long before they dropped even close to the price they were asking, same for the original ipod and many other products. They have an amazing capability for getting vendors to deliver at the price THEY dictate.
