Check out this for opinions on the phone:

Searchs on this site will also turn up either a code based unlocking procedure or places to get it unlocked using a cable (send the phone in). A place that will sell cable and instructions (about $25) is GSM Phone Source. I havent used them but a lot of people at the site above have used them for unlocking, flashing memory etc and seem to be satisfied.
www.virtualdynamix.com (http://www.virtualdynamix.com) is an excellent unlocking firm, and they are in CA.

I was talking with our company cell phone Guru and he was telling me the Sony Ericsson T610 was the current phone-of-choice.
It looks like a great little device, despite the slow CPU speed...

What a coinkidink, I bought that phone yesterday!
Still trying to figger it out, got bluetooth to work with my Mac, so far no complaint. Don't know how it'll work abroad. I didn't want ot get it because it has a camera and I really don't need one, but that's all Cingular had.
Pretty screen. http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/biggrin.gif

Wait till you get outside on a sunny day http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/frown.gif
I put some tape of the lens on my T610, as it rapidly collects dust and I don't use it anyway.
The bundled software is lousy, but Bluetooth works out of the box without any of the SE drivers.
u can also try cellunlocker.com...
SF based... I've personally used him twice on different phones. I just drive to his place and it takes like a minute to do.
btw... how's the AT&T reception on that phone? especially near work?

I'm on AT&T... In general there are a few holes, but I get MUCH better coverage than Cingular in residential areas. I'm attributing this to Cell One (old) and AT&T TDMA having fought the battles ages ago for transmitters in sensitive areas vs Cingular having to go through all those problems again.
What is the best case to protct the screen and camera that you can use teh phone in the case at the same time?
Ie, what do you use?
Thanks.
