Does any one own a GPS navigation system that can be transferred from one car to another? I would prefer a system that is not laptop based.

Any suggestions?

Alot of the portable units "suck"

Look at the newer Garmin Palm based PDA's, they are QUITE good... you can get a charging cradle and holder as well. If you put a beefy SD card on it, you can put a good sized database on it.

I have to say, I have used the Copilot Pocket copilot systems from ALK or Travroute for years. They run on the pocekt pc platform. They ahve a very similar interface as the Hertz Neverlost, which is from MAgellan actually, but those systems cost 2K+.
The copilots can be had as a sleeve for a pocketpc or a Bluetooth reeiver. Slick. I have not tried the later, but will probably jump into it soon.
For the money and regardless, I find their directions very accurate and their use very simple. My GF, who is very smart but not technically so, was able to use it in my absence without any instruction. It is that intuitive.
They run about 300$ for hardware and software. You can sometimes find one on Ebay for less. Any version after say 3.0 is acceptable and the maps will be up to date.
I never leave home without it.

Your best system by far is the Magellan 750NAV, which is available as a hard install or in a carry bag with a cigarette lighter and a magnetic antenna. This is the same system as the Hertz Neverlost.

I own one and would not be without it.

You will find yourself navigating through strange cities as if you were a native.

It is the best. Not cheap, but the best.

Thanks a lot for all the suggestions. I shall follow through on all of them this week and hopefully pick up a GPS system.

I have had the new Garmin StrretPilot 2610 for a month now, and I am thrilled. I really liked the Magellan system when I rented from Hertz, so I was not sure how much I would like the Garmin. But frankly, this GPS blows the Magellan away.

It is portable from car to car. All you need is the unit and the 12V adapter (included.) No antenna or other hardware. It comes with all software in the price, including detailed maps for the USA which can be loaded onto standard CF memory (included.)

From what I have seen, it has all the features of the Magellan plus many, many more. Add the touchscreen interface, the lower price than the Magellan, and this is your best buy!

I would normally not endorse any product so enthusiastically, but this is one that has exceeded my expectations.
