Got it!!!!

Unexpected but I walked into a local Apple dealer this evening and there you go, they had it in stock. So what'd I do. I had a cancelled business trip, an extra weekend at home, so new Mac!

Airport is significantly better than the old TiBook. Everything else works the simply flawless way you'd expect Apple's products to respond. I've got the thing connected to my company's intranet and will work on the other aspects over the weekend.

D*mn is it easy to move from an older Mac to a new system. Put the old system into target mode and simply drag the apps across and there you go. Advantages of Unix and a well thought out approach I guess.

Nothing against MS in this. My current IBM T30 (Win2K) is a good machine. The 600X (Win2k and earlier) and 770 (much earlier) before it were also reliable travel companions. MS OS's are wearing the Mantle of Trouble's that comes with owning so much of the market. No getting over this in my view.

Somehow I think MS's own redemption lie's in giving up the Monopoly.

I like my new machine. What matters is; does the job get done. Answer; Yes.

I just ordered the 12" 1Ghz from the Apple Store yesterday. I'm eagerly awaiting it's arrival. . . http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/biggrin.gif

I have a 12 PB. Got it in March, love it. I had some software compatability issues that were just resolved however (Ive been all Wintel until March) that were stopping me from using it for all purposes. Now that they are fixed I dont anticipate using my Win notebooks much. The Bluetooth is great, I can use my cell phone as a GPRS modem without wires. Also the built in wireless and wired networking is great. I have the version with a DVD burner so it is really nice for transfering data and watching movies while traveling. The battery life is really good also, I got an IGO juice for it and Im good to go.

My wife has the 15 inch PB and I borrowed it a few times but found it to be pretty unweildy to travel with. I had a real problem getting it in and out of a briefcase at security checkpoints for example. The only things I dont like about the 12 inch model are the lack of a PCMCIA slot and the need for a dongle to hook to a projector. A USB drive largely solves the lack of PC slot however, at least for transfering files between computers.

A big advantage of all of these for some users is that you can install something like KDE on them and get a Linux/Unix environment but can still access the Office type documents. That said, there are some odd things about the Unix implementation on the Macs that have caused incompatibilities that I know have caused friends to go back to Linux.

A 15 foot screen doesn't sound too portable... http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttravel_forum/biggrin.gif

I went for the 12" in april, and it's great. I'm the first to admit that I'm not a "power user," but as far as a portable machine for travel, it's worked out as well as I expected. It doesn't feel like (many) corners were cut to get the machine down to size, IMHO.
