Phoenix officer's gun is lost on trip from Phila.

A Phoenix police officer said his gun was stolen from his checked baggage Wednesday night when he was en route home to Phoenix from Philadelphia International Airport. Phoenix Officer Jeffrey Stockl told Philadelphia Police Detective Larry McLaughlin he had notified America West Airlines that he was transporting a firearm in his checked baggage.

Stockl said he discovered his gun was missing upon returning home after the 6 p.m. flight. Under an alliance America West has with Continental Airlines, America West baggage is searched by Continental employees, said Patty Nowack, America West spokeswoman.
America West is also investigating the incident, Nowack said.

Hopefully the gun eventually "turned up?" http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

It might be a shot in the dark, but they probably should question the luggage handlers about the missing weapon. Sometimes those folks aren't real high caliber employees, and they might have rifled through the luggage. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Have you ever watched from the window of the plane at all the baggage handlers and wondered if the airline had just set up a recruiting desk right outside the prison exit?

actually, they are on a work release program in the prison. 18 cents/hr and all they can carry back to the lockup

Actually HP used to be one of the best airlines for baggage handling according to the DOT Airline Consumer Reports.

That changed quickly after management eliminated ramp workers from receiving profit sharing bonuses in retaliation for union organization efforts.

Profit sharing isn't much of a worry these days. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/rolleyes.gif

A locked bag will not prevent a thief from pursuing his trade. One would like to think that special care would be taken to safeguard firearms, but no airline is about to make that type of commitment. Consequently, guns WILL diasppear.

You may not be aware of this but Clayton Moore (The Lone Ranger) flew CO through IAH and his twin 6-guns were stolen by CO baggage handler(s). Obviously, nothing is sacred within the baggage compartment.
