I booked an award on America West with my miles on Continental, through the CO reservations line. The best seats they could give me were in the back of the plane. I called HP reservations and asked if I could get a better seat (closer to the front and on the aisle) since I am an HP Platinum, and I also requested that she place my FF# in the record so that it would print on the boarding pass. I did not have my new Elite card and needed my status to print so that I could board early.
Well by placing my FF# in the record it caused me to be upgraded last night when the EUAs cleared! Then the news got better when I received my brand new Plat Card in the mail today. I think the trick is that when you purchase an HP flight with CO or NW miles for an Int'l flight that requires you to pay the taxes ($51 to Mexico), it shows as a revenue ticket in the system and clears the upgrade. My friend who is a Silver Elite could not clear because she used HP miles to buy the ticket and even thought she paid the tax, it shows as a non-revenue ticket in the HP system. Maybe someone else has more knowledge on this issue.
