America West FlightFund (Discontinued Program) - Upgrading if EUA has not cleared

Pretty soon I will be going on America West since making Silver Elite status, and was wondering what is your experience with the Elite Line upgrading you if you have not been upgraded by EUA? Or do they usually make you upgrade at the gate?

The elite line will do the upgrade if it's available. For some reason, the automated process never seems to work for me when going to/from EWR, so I always call to check. It works fine everywhere else though.

I'm thinking they don't run the EUA on the PHX/EWR flights very often since they're always filled up with full fare elites.

They probably don't run EUA for LAX-PHX either. Everytime I call the reservation, upgrade is available, but I have never received EUA.
