ISLAMABAD (AP)--Pakistan International Airlines on Monday announced details of an ambitious plan to replace its fleet with new aircraft over the next 10 years, buying both Boeing and Airbus planes.
Hamid Nawaz Khan, the state-run airline's chairman, said the board had agreed to take delivery of three Boeing 777s and seven turboprop aircraft by 2003. He said the airline would also integrate Airbus A340 series aircraft into the passenger fleet and purchase two A310-300 freight aircraft in 2006.
The board has not decided on whether the aircraft will be purchased or leased, or whether or not the new planes would be new or used, Khan said. The airline also plans to upgrade its short-range fleet with Boeing 737-400 and Airbus A320/321/33 aircraft, and to phase out Boeing 737-300 by 2010-2011.
The aircraft are part of a $2 billion phased fleet replacement program to buy 11 planes by 2011. The average age of Pakistan International Airlines' planes is 23 years old.
"At present we even have 39 years old planes in our fleet," Khan said.
