I'm planning a trip on ELAL from newark to tlv. My flight leaves at 4 P.M what time does the check in counter open?
does ELAL have personal screens in economy(it's a 747). How does it rate to other airlines as far as comfort goes?
I too am flying JFK-TLV on 7/8....any chance of a mini DO? Are there other FTer's in Israel?

The counter should open 3-4 hours before the flight (Terminal B).
ElAl have personal IFE system in the 747-400 and 777-200 planes which are on all the JFK flights and most of EWR flights.
Sometimes, on extra flights like around holidays they might fly a 747-200 or a 767 to EWR. Check their website for plane assignment by date (in the online timetable).

I was surprised in April to see an old El Al B747-200 with the old colours at JFK.

744 is 747-400.
As for 747-200 - April is passover time and they do add flights at these times and use other planes as the 767ER or 747-200 on them.
For flight 001 TLV-JFK they use the 747-400 on a regular basis.

On another thought, LY operates a charter flight to JFK 3 times a week on a 747-200 with a stopover in europe. It is marketed by SunDor - ElAl's charter subsidiary.

LY service has gotten much better over the years.
Business Class (now called Platinum on the 744 and 777) is excellent - especially on the 777. The seat is very comfortable, the personal screen is enormous and they are now serving 4 course meals, with a desert cart at the end.
Coach is pretty standard, not bad at all for economy.

The 747-200 I saw at JFK was a regular nonstop flight. But it was during the April holidays. And full.

Lotus I find El Al Y excellent, a lot better than most airlines.
