AmWest ranks low on quality

America West Airlines fell sharply in a ranking of airline quality, coming in 18th out of 21 domestic carriers.
The Tempe-based airline was the lowest-ranked of the 10 major airlines in the Zagat survey, with an overall score of 12.70 out of 30.
Only Spirit, Vanguard and AirTran, three smaller players, scored lower.
The top-rated airline, Midwest Express, earned a 26.53.
America West had the second-biggest point drop since the last survey in 1998, falling 2.82 points. It ranked 11th that year. Alaska Airlines suffered a 3.26-points decline but still finished third overall.
"The (latest) survey is based on feedback for 2000, which was a disappointing year for us," America West spokeswoman Janice Monahan said. "We think we would have done better if it had been done in the last few months."
The survey asked 31,500 frequent travelers to rate the airlines on service, comfort and food.
America West got high marks for low fares but was dinged for staff attitude, overbooking and delays.
