Here's an interesting one:

My wife supposed to fly TUS-PHX-LAX earlier today, returning in a few days. Last night, HP called and said the TUS-PHX flight was canceled becuase of maintenance (not enough pax) and said they'd reaccommodate my wife on a later or earlier flight. She said, no, she needed to get in at the same time because she had arrangements for someone to pick her up. So they put her on WN TUS-LAX.

When she told me, I reminded her that she needed all the 500-mile segs to qualify for CO Silver elite (that's why she was flying out of TUS in the first place). So I called to change the reservation for her.

As I called, I remembered that one gets miles for canceled flights, so I thought about hanging up, then had a good idea. So I told them that she'd just get on her original flight from PHX-LAX and save HP the trouble of buying her a ticket on WN (and save us the trouble of driving to TUS), as long as they gave her the miles for the canceled segment.

The agent said she wasn't sure how that worked, so she checked with her supervisor, then came back and said that was fine. Funny, I thought that's how all airlines did it. Surprised at why she thought it might be a problem, I went over it with her a few times to make sure.

So today, sometime after she flew to LAX, I called to make sure this would be credited. CO OnePass couldn't access the record, so I called FlightFund and explained the situation. The agent said that since my wife had just not taken the flight, she would not get the miles. I explained how my wife was told she'd get the miles and had actually saved HP money by not doing the original reaccommodation. The agent insisted that my wife would not get the miles, but said we could call after the fact and explain that we had been told she would get them.

At this point, I was frustrated. I could see my wife ending up 300 miles short of elite and CO deciding not to give it to her. But just then, the agent went into the PNR for whatever reason and looked it over. The supervisor from the night before had clearly marked that my wife was to get the miles from the canceled flight. So this agent says that we have nothing to worry about, since it was noted in the record, although it isn't usually done that way.

I was much relived. I will be more relieved when the flight posts.

Now here's hoping her PHX-TUS flight in a few days is canceled and the same thing happens!
