America West FlightFund (Discontinued Program) - New Airline

I have never flown on America West but will be this november from BOS-PHX in A320. What is the airline like compared to the biggies and should I make the effort to upgrade to F for the 5:45 flight? Any info would be greatly apreciated since I have the option to go on UA via ORD but dont want to count out America west before i find out what they are like.

America West is a disaster. Tons and tons of horror stories; I thought mine was bad until I heard an acquaintance's. Awful service and frequent cancellations. Definitely go with United (or my preference, American, or any other major airline).

I've only flown them a few times this year, but always in 1st and they've been a good airline for me. I took them from PHX to ATL and back and they were very good. So I'd say as long as you are in 1st you should be fine.

I fly them often from TPA to Vegas and have been happy with the service and the price, which is over $200 cheaper than from Ft Myers. Only delay leaving was a 4 hour due to a landing getting to use since someone had a heart attack (we were comped $7 each for breakfast at TGI Fridays and Mom and I were upgraded to 1st class, and apologized to!)Only other delay was an equiptment problem in Phoenix. I have had much worse on United!!

Judy, I echo your comment. I gave up UA for CO/HP a year and a half ago, and have never felt a need to go back to UA. In response to the original post, HP's First Class is at least as comfortable if not more so than UA, however the food is much better on UA. But HP's FC comes without the UA attitude!

I took to Phx/Bos RT a few weeks back. This is the longest flight in Am West's stable, summertime flights to ANC notwithstanding.

FC is very good on Am West, although coach can be lacking on occasion. I have been fortunate enough to never have been burned, but many others cannot say the same. Just lucky, I think. Point being that Am West is definitely a no frills airline, and is for the most part competing with the exceptionally cost conscious SWA.

Definitely spring for the FC seating on this flight at your earliest opportunity.

America West is awful. Their first class is worse than coach on other airlines. I use them only when necessary. Good luck.

I've been flying the PHX-BOS route for the last 4 years and have never had a problem. I would much prefer this than going thru ORD and dealing with numerous delays.

I'm flying ONT-BOS thru PHX this Xmas in fact. By connecting in PHX you can avoid all the potential weather delays you would run into by connecting in the midwest.

Two words: America's Worst.

Here is my 2c.

A flight on any of their Boeing (737/757) planes: America's Worst.

A flight on any of their Airbus (320/319)planes: not that bad. Try to get on a 319 they are new and rather nice.

I often start a trip out of SLC on a 737-200 yes they are old. (Stay away from 1 A-B on these planes because there is no bulkhead in front of this row so everyone else on the plane trips on your feet as they get on.)

I then connect to a 320/319 and they are very nice new FC seats. I don't think they are as nice as those on CO but not bad.

We live in Scottsdale and America West is our hometown airline. For the most part Am West has been just fine. Of the 18 flights we've used them for this year only for were problems. One plane needed new brakes before we took off, 2 were over sold and one had a delay due to mechanical reasons. We are taking the precaution on our last trip of the year to NYC in November of leaving a day early in case of weather delays or mechanical problems. We always take this last trip in FC because of the length of the trip.
