I was checking for fares this weekend, LGB-PHX, and Expedia's cheapest routing was $291. The weird thing was the outbound routing - LGB-PHX-TUS-PHX. The return was the normal PHX-LGB. If I wanted just a normal "LGB-PHX" it would have been $344!
Talk about strange yield management!!!

Not really. In my experience, usually with most airlines, the nice non-stops are more expensive (ie the most desired routing). Did you try other sites such as www.expedia.com (http://www.expedia.com) or www.itasoftware.com (http://www.itasoftware.com) etc. Often these will give different results. When you ask for cheap, dont expect convience.

I realize that about non-stops, that's common knowledge.
However, I have NEVER seen somthing like this, where on your first leg you do the nonstop, then are (technically) required to fly to another city and back to get a lower fare.
And yes, Expedia and Travelocity had the same routings!

LGB is a great airport to park at, and fly into, and out of, as well.
Who is servicing pax there now - HP, AA, and ?
Seems like the fares are commonly high out of there though, or into LGB.
True? Sometimes?

I fly AA out of there on a somewhat regular basis, their fares are usually lower than LAX and SNA, especially on the 7 day advance stuff.
AA, HP and Allegiant Air fly out of there. Allegiant is a charter airline that flys to Las Vegas. Kind of like WinAir that failed last year.

SNA_Flyer, I was messing around on NW's Web site once and found a PHX-DTW routing of PHX-DTW-ATL-DTW. It was a few bucks more, for PFCs, but would've been good for someone wanting to rack up a few more miles.
