Fare only appears on US expedia sites, and those in other countries cannot book it on their versions. US site requires US-based credit card and delivery address. Shows for return on 30th also. Fare rules show both 55.00 and 555.00 fare versions.

Row 45 is the next-to-last row. I would avoid row 46 because it looked like limited recline. Row 45 is not bad because all; the Y lavs on the 340-300 are behind row 29 so you don't get any lines in the rear of the aircraft. The only thing back there is the galley.
Has anyone here tried checkmytrip.com? Lufthansa gave me an Amadeus PNR and it worked like a charm, including excellent seat maps (much better than those on united.com).

I probably won't stay in Frankfurt. I've been wanting to drive over to the Nurnberg area to check out where my family's ancestors came from back in 1872 so this is the perfect opportunity. For people looking for things to do around Frankfurt, there is a Lufthansa bus you can take or rent a car to Heidelberg, a really beautiful town. A one day trip will be quite sufficient.
Kurt, the Golf will be fine assuming you are not looking for an automatic transmission but you will not be in the left lane for too long and if you are keep an eye out on your rear view mirror!
I have had good luck with renting from Sixt in Europe but haven't rented at FRA.
Perhaps we should all have a tail-gate party on the flight back on the 30th as we all seem to be in the last 10 rows or so. I seem to be the only one going earlier on the 23rd. I actually did have to do a business trip 24-26!

Got my tickets via FedEx this afternoon - they look fine to me. I called Expedia to make sure things looked OK from their end - again, no problems. The agent was cool - she even congratulted me for being "speedy" and getting a good deal.
I'm in row 23 DEN-FRA and 22 FRA-DEN (aisle seats in the middle block) - maybe I should switch seats to sit in the back with the fun people. Might try for row 30 (exit row) at check in but those seats are next to the toilets so they aren't that tempting.
Sixt's Golf is a 5-speed so it should be OK. A BMW 316 is also available for a bit more $ but it's still just a 1.6 liter engine, not a 2.5 like we're used to in the U.S.
We had an Opel Corsa 1.2 in Italy a few years ago - great gas mileage but you had to drive very defensively on the Autostrada to avoid p*****g off the fast cars in the left lane and still pass trucks in the slow lane.

(I hope you all don't mind, just copying from all the replies)
Anybody else? Did I miss anybody? Looks like everybody is coming back on the 30th.
I would not recommend row 30 as in addition to the nearby lavs, row 31 is for unaccompanied minors (so says LH), while I don't expect children travelling alone to be rowdy, hearing/smelling motion sickness is not too fun. :-)

I thought these upgrades were Systemwide Upgrade certificates provided for UA elites, rather than upgrading miles (which you can usually upgrade only from full fares - which the LH fare is not)?

The SWUs cannot be used on non-UA metal. But you can upgrade LH flights with UA miles (10k miles one way for full Y fare and 20k miles one way for M and B fares. The other fares, technically, cannot be upgraded).
The normal procedure is to book the LH tickets with an upgradeable fare, call UA for them to request an upgrade with LH, and when approved by LH, UA will send the certificates (specifically for LH flights) to you which you then present physically at check-in.
You can ask UA to send you the miles upgrade certificates without them making the upgrade request and try to use them at check-in at whatever fare you have. I have only heard anecdotal reports that it works sometimes with non-upgradeable fares but I think it is extremely unlikely unless it is an overbooked situation, and there are plenty of business seats and there aren't any LH Senators (elites) that they can upgrade instead and you have a certain natural charm that check-in agents like.

So is everybody ready? I have my tickets to DEN in hand. Does anyone want to get together at DEN before departure? I am getting into DEN at 11:23am so I have lots of time to spare. Unfortunately, I don't have any Star Alliance status/RCC membership, so no lounge access for me.
Also, I was looking on ITN/seat maps, and the 4/27 outbound still has quite a few seats, but on the 4/30 outbound:
LH 446 F6 A6 C9 D9 Y4 B4 M4 H4 Q0 V0 W0 S0
- looks like 4 seats left to sell in economy, the Travelocity seat map shows only 2 assignable seats (in econ) left besides the unaccompanied minor row (row 31). Maybe they'll be giving operational upgrades for this flight. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I have only heard anecdotal reports that it works sometimes with non-upgradeable fares but I think it is extremely unlikely unless it is an overbooked situation, and there are plenty of business seats and there aren't any LH Senators (elites) that they can upgrade instead and you have a certain natural charm that check-in agents like.</font>
If you have LH miles, the upgrade can work much easier as LH allows upgrades on any fare-base. Just swing out 20000 LH-miles each way (US-adress required, 35000 otherwise), and you sit upfront with a confirmed upgrade. Just checked: There are at least four available award-seats in C on 4/23 (DEN-FRA) and 4/30 (FRA-DEN), but only two award-seats available either on 4/25 and 4/27 (DEN-FRA).
If you don't have LH-miles, LH FTL and SEN can use their miles for others, so if you know someone with that LH-status and enough miles at hand, you may be able to trade with them...
Greetings - Dirk

FWIW, LH does honor UA Int'l Sales Upgrades at the gate only, space available, on any fare, regardless of what fares are mentioned as applicable on the cert (which apply to UA only).
Have we determined who among us will be the first to fly this trip? I would be very interested to hear what their experience is at the LH counter in Denver and points onward. Let's hope they welcome us with open arms, as we of course know they should http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

So far looks like I will be the first by travelling on the 23rd. Will try to post on the 24th about the experience. Since I have to be in FRA for business, I will most likely pay if they ask for anything additional and wait to sort it out later with Expedia/LH.
Edited to add:
Unless they have already caught this at their rate desk and flagged reservations made at this price (in which case, I assume they would have contacted us), the agents at the airport won't blink an eye. The pricing listed on the tickets themselves have often varied for me in the past based on some refunds, adjustments, vouchers, etc. So since the ticket has a valid fare code, it won't raise any flags at check-in unless this has already been flagged. Even the ticketing agents on the phone often cannot find the fare for fare codes that are no longer offered. Of course, my travel might trigger this flag for those following me http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif Or the mass of people on 27th might!

I don't think the price is any big deal. I have flown their auction ticket flights several times: $240 SFO-Berlin; $260 SFO-FRA. The ticket agents usually just congratulate me on a good find http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif.

venk,
I hope you have a good flight today. Let us know how it goes...
Also, looking at ITN today, the inbound on 4/30 shows:
LH446 4/30 - F3 A3 C0 D0 Y0 B0 M0 H0 Q0 V0 W0 S0
Looks like business cabin is sold out, first has 3 seats to sell. I called LH and they said it's overbooked by 30. (hmm...)
--
Anyways, here's an updated list for those on the flight:
Let me know if there are any changes. Feel free to say 'hi' on the plane. I'll be the one in the aisle. I get into DEN on 4/27 at 11:23am and my companion gets in at 3pmish. Let me know if any of you want to get together for lunch or something.
Sorry about you not being able to go, fuzzywuzzy... the fare rules did say no changes/refunds. But maybe you can save the ticket and try and get it changed after the flight (maybe they won't pull up the fare rules...)

Anyone have any experience on what Lufthansa provides in terms of compensation for a voluntary bump?
Also - I recently signed up for Miles&More and have a temp # but no card. All I need to do is provide that # at check-in correct - and I will be goody-good.
For one who dosen't fly LUF - should I have these miles credited to a UA Mileage Plus account I haven't used - but would probably use before any more flights on LUF.

June 2000 - VDB from a FRA-ORD flight. Received DM1200 (around US$800 at the time) in LH vouchers. Rebooked FRA-PHL in Y (op-upgraded to C at gate) (then booked on TW to STL).
On the ORD-FRA earlier that month, they were offering DM1800 and a later (evening) flight; but, they didn't need anyone in the end.
Cheers,

Thanks for the info on VDB compensation. Does anyone have any idea why it's even overbooked? None of the other LH flights are even close to being overbooked (ORD, SFO, PHL, LAX, EWR, JFK, IAD). All of them have 9s across the board on ITN. And April 30 is a Tuesday, not the busiest time for travelling.
But FRA-YVR shows Y1 on the same day - that's kind of odd too. Is there some kind of German holiday or something or is there something special about DEN & YVR (cruise season starts in YVR, but that's all I know).
It just seems really odd that the 4/30 flight is overbooked. I can't imagine there's that many people who snagged the cheapo fare (it was up for probably less than 24 hours and you had to enter specific dates to get it).
doctajay, do you have any miles on your UA Mileage Plus account? If you have a few, you might as well credit the LH flights into that account. I am crediting mine to my AC Aeroplan account which has a mere 2,000 some miles.

In my opinion it's too early to say that. Lufthansa "adjusts" availability 14/7/3 days out by cancelling all reservations that have not been ticketed and cannot be ticketed any more in the corresponding booking-class.

My guess would be that they hope lots of you 55$-pax do not really fly with them???
<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Is there some kind of German holiday or something

No, no holiday to speak of. The next "important" holiday in Germany (not sure if everywhere, but at least here where I live) is May 8th.

I guess it's not overbooked once you get there. 30 is not really much for that aircraft, especially with those unticketed reservations not sorted out yet.

I received 1200 DM in vouchers for being bumped last July on a FRA-EWR flight. They flew me to SFO the next day and I received a hotel room and meal vouchers.

OK, must be my medication...of course there is a German holiday next to April 30th: May 1st is labor-day over here and therefor a public holiday in all of Germany. No idea why this escaped me...sorry!

Hi folks,
Just to let you know made it to FRA today with the $55 ticket and with UA mileage upgraded to business class. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif
They didn't bat an eyelid at the ticket or the upgrade request at the check-in counter.
Edited to add:
The miles for this outbound segment have already been posted to my UA MP account.

I am still fairly new to the forum:
"ITN" is the American Express Webpage, right?
How can you get the booking numbers for a specific flight?
I thought there was no such page where you would find the exact numbers for all classes of travel.
Am I wrong?!?

I just checked with www.flyaow.com/class.htm (http://www.flyaow.com/class.htm) and the lower fares show 9's for the return on April 30. I am ready to go to FRA!

With any luck, I should be making my way towards Denver in about 6 hours.

Welcome to the boards,
either use the flyaow.com link above, or set up a profile with ITN and set it up for expert mode. Then always sign in first, then click on the flights tab, and it will show you the availability broken down into fare classes each time....

venk,
nice job with the upgrade - hope it also works out for the return. If not, you will still have fun with the other FT'ers back in coach. Did you grab a bite at Lefty's (my favorite DEN spot) before your trip?

Sorry to hear that you can't go, tiviander. I am in the middle of my run to DEN. I am in YYC right now on a mini layover.
FYI, found the same fare 4/27 - 4/30 for
449 total...Still cheap by most standards.

Thanks. Although I have a second certificate I am not planning on using it for the return. I needed the sleep on the outbound as I had to give some presentations on the day that I reached so I used it. Business class on Lufthansa is nothing to write about. The seats do not recline enough and not flat enough to get a very good sleep. Mix that with the German penchant for hard seats (Recaro or not) and it is not very enticing for day trips.
On the return, I intend to be at the "tail-end" with any of FTers around in that section.
Sorry didn't know about Lefty's. I had a lunchtime flight into DEN with FC upgrade and had a decent meal on the way.

Sorry, couldn't meet up with any one here on the return trip. I had to do another R/T from FRA to the US for the weekend and I was so tired today at FRA that I finally decided to upgrade to business class for this flight back.
Cheapest R/T business class I must say even accounting for miles. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
Hope y'all had a good time in Frankfurt.

I had a very nice time in Germany. Went to Bacharach & cruised the Rhine. Checked my UA mileage plus, my outbound LH miles posted! No bonus but status miles. Did 3 segments LAX-DEN each way. The flight attendents on my last leg (SFO-LAX) said I was the "crazy" one for fly FRA-DEN then flying DEN-SEA, SEA-SFO, & SFO-LAX. Oh well, I had loads of fun & my UA status miles/FF miles got richer! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gifI was 6 for 6 on upgrades on the UA ticket to/from DEN. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

I've stayed in Bacharach before, at the castle hostel on the hill above the city (about 1,000 steps straight up). Glad you were able to get over there. Plenty to see along the river over in that direction, too.

Just wanted to report back that I went and returned without any major problems. My etix from Orbitz somehow got screwed up and LH ended up having to re-issue paper tickets at the gate at no cost to me (the whole ordeal took about an hour to sort out). All in all, the fare paid was clearly printed on the flight coupons they reissued...
It was also fun to meet chemist661 and greytop.
The outbound miles on AC, UA and LH have been quasi-posted to my Aeroplan account. Seat pitch was similar to Delta's though. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif
