HELP! I am new to this forum and I can't even read half the messages because of a plethora acronyms and abbreviations! While I know _some_ of them ORD, IAD, and MCI, I have yet to memorize every freakin airport and airline in thw world! Where can I go to get a list!

Go to www.ual.com (http://www.ual.com) and log in as a guest, then go to Plan an Itinerary. You will then see a section that says "City Codes" or "Airport Codes". Open one of these and then reduce it so that it sits at the bottom of your screen all the time. Then you can simply look at it when you see an airport abbreviation you don't recognize.

I've been on FlyerTalk at least a year and a half and I certainly don't know them all either. Sometimes I even intentionally put down the wrong one, just to be ornery. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Macbravery -

Welcome! If you're reading a post and you can't figure out what the abbreviations mean, call the person on it! A lot of times it's just because the person's lazy (I can say this b/c I'm really bad about it - see?).

It's not just the airport codes. I find more use of acronymic (is that a word) initials than other places in life. For example, IMHO clearly means "in my humble opinion", but I don't think I'd ever seen this anywhere before and I'm not really sure how I figured it out, except from context.
macbravery, I'd just say hang in there, and it will make more sense with time.

It's quite thoughtless to be using jargon, acronyms, colloquilisms and obscure Americanisms on a board aimed at a global audience, many of whom are not native English speakers.

At least, that is what I tell myself each and every time I do it.

http://www.learnthenet.com/english/index.html

You can search for just about any acronym used online there.

For airport codes, google can be a huge help, just put in the airport code and search.

I have no problem with prople using acronyms as long as they are fairly standard ones that are easy to find if I don't already know them.

Welcome to FT Jtmom!

At the top of this thread, and every thread & forum on FT, under "help" is a link for "airport code lookup"! If you type in the name of the city, it will give you the airport code. If the city name has more than 1 possibility (ie - Manchester), it will give you the codes for all (Manchester, NH and Manchester, England)! Or if the city has 2 or more airports (ie - Washington, DC), it will give all airport codes for that city (DCA for National & IAD for Dulles)!

I hope this is what you were asking for.

Why would you want to look them up? If a poster wants to be understood, he or she will write out the name of the airport. If instead the intent is to appear "in the know" or cool or to communicate to a select few, acronyms are used.

I have been doing this miles thing for more than a few years, and I love this forum as as one of my major sources of information. But if I don't understand the acronyms, I assume the post is not meant for me anyway, and just go onto the next.

BNA is my home airport (Nashville), and is BNA for historical reasons -- it was originally Berry Field (in NAshville). Sometimes knowing the airfield names or histories of the airports can help in memorizing the codes. For example, Louisville=SDF, for StanDiFord Field. (Anyone want to explain 'MSY' for New Orleans?)

(Anyone want to explain 'MSY' for New Orleans?)
Stolen from Wikipedia:

The airport was originally named after daredevil aviator John Moisant, who died in an airplane crash on this land (which was devoted to farming at the time) in 1910. The abbreviation MSY was derived from Moisant Stock Yards, as the old airport kept NEW.

Plans for Moisant Field were begun in 1940, as New Orleans' older Shushan Airport – now New Orleans Lakefront Airport (NEW), still serving private and corporate aircraft – was in need of expansion or replacement. With World War II the land became a government air base. It was returned to civilian control after the war, and commercial service began at Moisant Field in May of 1946.

I wonder if there is any other field named after someone who died at that location?

Thanks! I assume there were other reasons for siting the airport there, but I can imagine the thought process: "Gee, if only there'd been a runway here, maybe he wouldn't have crashed!"

At least, that is what I tell myself each and every time I do it.Right, but let's not forget how many people think using an airport code to refer to a city (e.g., "MIA" instead of typing all those extra letters it takes to spell out "Miami") shows how cool and travel-savvy they are.

Some of these are actually the first part of the city name, like

LEB = LEBanon, NH
MYR = MYRtle Beach, SC
ITH = ITHaca, NY

Some are made up of letters from the city name...
AVL = AsheViLle, NC
BGM = BinGhaMton, NY
GSP = Greenvile/SPartanburg, SC
GSO = GreenSborO, NC
(and don't confuse either of those with Greenville, NC which is PGV - stands for Pitt/GreenVille airport as it is in Pitt County).

MDT is like CVG - the airport is located in MiDdleTown, PA (but we all think of it as Harrisburg)

SWF stands for SteWart Field. Not sure how you remember that it's in Newburgh, NY - unless maybe you knew a Single White Female who lived there :)

A couple mnemonics I just came up with:
IPT - It's Pretty Tiny (Williamsport, PA)
ART - A Remote Terminal (Watertown, NY)

Based on the list of cities you posted I am guessing you work for US Airways?? ;)

The complete US radio prefix list is A, K, N, W; please explain all those "A" designators ?? And "N" tail numbers...

For every rule, the gov't will gladly provide no fewer than two exceptions.
If no rule exists, one shall be implemented on the spot.
