From the November 13 issue of the Knoxville News Sentinel:
http://www.knoxnews.com/kns/business/article/0,1406,KNS_376_2423885,00.html
"Knoxville is the jewel in our crown, if the crown is Atlanta," said Subodh Karnik, senior vice president of network and revenue management. "It's a very important city for Delta, critical to the success of not only Atlanta, but for all of Delta."

I think somebody got the "family jewels" mixed up along the way.
Knoxville is less than three hours from ATL. So, with all the foolish hassles, it is usually less time and hassle to just drive. Unless of course you are trying to get someplace besides ATL from Knoxville, then it might make sense to connnect.
But, Crown Jewel? Ha Ha Ha!

I think what they mean is you need to hock the crown jewels to pay the fare. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
I fly into Nashville, rent a Navigator, and drive.
I usually come out ahead of flying directly into Knoxville.

Anybody who would believe this crap would probably place an order for 200 or more 7E7's or the miraculous mystic Sonic Cruiser. Hey, Knoxvillions........itsa all DL PR and lies. AA used to say the same PR thing about Raleigh Durham, St Louis etc so the city would give them tax abatements, utility discounts etc.

why Knoxville? I nominate...
Compton, California
Gary, Indiana
Trenton, New Jersey
now *those* are crown jewels!
Delta's commments might carry more weight if they didn't charge me $800 RT from Atlanta, when I can go to FLL for +/-$300 - unless their strategy to show us that Knoxville is a crown jewel involves showing us the beauty of I-75!
