"Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Administrator, Adm. James M. Loy in coordination with Greyhound Lines, Inc., and key elected officials will hold a press conference to demonstrate prototype designs of new security equipment for buses."

Scumbag Loy isn't content with making airline travel a disgraceful experience with no respect for civil liberties; now he wants to infect Greyhound too.

In what way do you find these snooze stories relevant? In the first the driver was attacked with an ordinary pair of scissors. Oooh -- the attacker could have used a *pencil* with the same results. In the second a deranged individual simply "Fought with the driver for control of the steering wheel...." There *was* no weapon in that incident.

In what way do these two incidents justify the addition of bus service to the list of transportation being "secured" by the Great Search for Pointy Objects?

PS: The pot and kettle are not here anymore. They've been thrown out with the baby and the bath water.

I'm afraid, there is nothing I can do to impress the importance of this situation upon you or anyone else. But to anyone else reading this, my point is well made.

Dairenn,

There is no question that a person carrying a knife or even a pair of scissors can injure or even murder other passengers on a bus.

But that same person can cause equal damage when he is walking down the street, at a shopping mall, or standing in a movie lobby. Do you think that everyone should be stopped and searched everywhere?

More than that, where would we draw the line for carrying what is a legal, albeit possibly dangerous, item?

If I go into a store and purchase a set of kitchen knives, certainly I can take them home in my private car. But what if I don't own a car? Would you stop me from taking them home in a city bus? If you would permit them in a city bus, why not in an intercity bus?

Obviously this would also hold true for scissors, nail files, and even such apparently harmless items like spray deodorant -- which if sprayed in bus driver's eyes could cause a serious accident.

Yes, there have been *so many* incidents of people driving Greyhound buses directly into tall city buildings, causing the buildings to break apart and fall down, killing thousands of people...

Al Qaeda prolly is reading this, and a light bulb has just gone on in their head: "a ha! merciful mohammad!!! The Americano's have a severely vulnerable point in their transportation system that we must take advantage of immediately!

Thank the Holy Book, we can carry box cutters onto their Greyhound buses, and use those buses to bring down the Americano's society!!! God is almighty, God is all good, to let such a vulnerability exist!! Greyhound buses are weapons of mass destruction!!!

Let's let's send a memo to Osama and tell him we are abandoning our plan to acquire chemical weapons, since we are targeting Greyhound buses instead!! Hurry before Admiral Loy foils our plan!!!"

If James M. Loy ever does vacate from his current job (whether by firing, retirement or quitting), I think he ought to team up with Spiff and form a comedy duo, whether on the radio, on television, in movies, or on stage in theatres as a live international traveling show.

I do not know about anyone else, but I would consider paying for tickets to see the Spiff & Loy show...

Mr Lombard: If there were a reasonable way to keep the crazy people off buses (or anywhere else for that matter), than additional security might make sense. The cases you refer to can only be stopped if we enter a total police state, and even then, a crazy person can walk to the driver and try to take control of the bus.

We must be safe, but only at a reasonable cost. The day your grandmother gets arrested because she has scissors in her sewing bag while she comes to visit you is a day none of us want to be part of.

WASHINGTON, Oct. 15 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The federal agency that brought 100 percent checked baggage screening, hardened cockpit doors, and better-trained, better-paid security screeners to airports is now bringing its security know-how to the world of over-the-road buses. Today, TSA, key members of Congress, and Greyhound Lines, Inc. came together to demonstrate some of the latest advancements in security for the tens of millions of Americans who travel on intercity buses every year.

The star of the day was Greyhound's bus 7211, which has been outfitted with a driver protection shield and state-of-the-art tracking and telecommunications equipment. The clear plastic driver shield presents a significant obstacle to any passenger that might want to do harm to the bus operator and gives the driver valuable time to bring the bus to a stop before responding to a situation. Meanwhile, the Global Positioning System and wireless telecommunications allow the driver to immediately alert authorities to an incident and rapidly transmit the bus' position anywhere in the country. This allows police to quickly respond to resolve any incident and gives fire and paramedics units a head start in finding and treating potential victims.

These security upgrades are a few of the numerous initiatives TSA is helping to fund with $20 million in grants announced August 5, 2003. The grants fund 67 projects proposed by bus companies and others located in 25 states and the District of Columbia. Along with driver protection and tracking and communication upgrades funds will also be used for passenger and baggage screening, security assessments and/or development of security plans, training for transportation personnel to recognize and respond to terrorist threats and criminal attacks, and for physical security enhancements such as fencing, lighting, and surveillance equipment at locations where buses are parked and maintained.</font>

I recall that the government of NSW ordered all the taxi companies in Sydney to install similar plexiglass shells to protect cabbies. I first saw them in mid-1999. Every cabbie I rode with hated them. As a matter of fact, they said the shells actually made them more vulnerable.

But, of course, Loy knows it all -- just ask him.

Our local County Fair now has metal detectors at the entrance and forbids visitors to carry pocket knives. I once took a long walk back to my car to safely secure my Swiss Army threat to publc safety.

Strolling through the commercial pavilion, but what should I find but a vendor of amazing eversharp kitchen knives! After watching vegetables and roasts being efficiently sliced and diced I enquired how I might obtain these amazing tools.

I was informed that after tendering my money a box would be handed to me forthwith.

It truly boggles the mind...

The irony was not lost on the vendor http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
