Dollar retreats on now-quashed missing plane rumor
The dollar retreated moderately midmorning on Thursday in New York, with currency strategists citing market speculation, since denied by U.S. aviation regulators, about a possible missing plane.
Starting around 10:00 a.m. EDT (1400 GMT), the euro moved up to about $1.1730 against the dollar in choppy trading conditions from $1.1710.
One currency strategist in New York said the dollar slipped on a rumor that a plane might have crashed. Paresh Upadhyaya, currency analyst with Putnam Investments in Boston, cited "a rumor hitting the dollar and equities" that a plane might be missing.
