"House Republicans and Democrats reached an agreement yesterday on key provisions of a rescue plan for airlines that would make the government pay most of their security and liability costs while reducing the hassle for passengers."

"Passengers no longer would be required to undergo second searches at airport gates."

I really wish a law was not necessary to eliminate this harassment, but the nonsense has gone on long enough. Overall, this bill seems pretty sensible to me.

Now, THIS is constructive.

What the article points out, among other things, is this: the practical reality of air travel today and the threat of terrorism mandates random security checks. Travelers generally do not want this. Instead of eliminating "security checks without probable cause" and leaving our air transport system more vulnerable because of that, the security system will attempt to introduce probable cause by beginning profiling of passengers, which will mean, in turn, less need for random security checks, or total elimination of random security checks without probable cause.

Quite sensible and reasonable.

What anonplz said were some good aspects, but on the downside, we're going to pay for security instead of the airlines, we're going to give them loan guarantees if we go to war, we're providing liability insurance for the airlines, we're paying for reinforced cockpit doors and bomb detection equipment.

Other proposals are for us to pay for layed off airline workers and lowering of the fuel tax.

The airlines have done it again; we're going to pay their costs for them and not get any benefits (unless you consider more restrictive fare rules a benefit).

These are all regular costs of doing business; when is the government going to buy me a new computer for my work? What a scam.
