SAN FRANCISCO, California (CNN) -- California officials planned to reduce their state of alert Monday on the Golden Gate Bridge after authorities reportedly discounted a threat that a terrorist might commandeer a military plane and crash it into the Bay area landmark.

State officials went on a "super-heightened" state of alert over the weekend because of the perceived threat.

So what did they do? How did their "super-heightened" state of alert protect the bridge from an aerial attack? Superman could have used his heat vision to blast the attackers, but these guys don't have that (yet).

Isn't this getting silly? Don't they have anything better to do in California than issue warnings to which people are unable to respond effectively?

They would have had a tough time finding it on Saturday. It was so shrouded in fog you couldn't see it from 1/4 mile away.

Wonder if this is anything like Double Secret Probation?

In somewhat related news today:

Updated: August 13, 2002 at 1:01 p.m.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Authorities say a construction worker has been killed on the job at the Golden Gate Bridge.

Police say the 42-year-old man landed in the water.

An investigation is being conducted by the California Highway Patrol and the California Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Details are still sketchy. But co-workers say the man was working on the bridge's earthquake retrofit project when he fell inside a pillar.

Authorities say this is the first fatality since the retrofit project began.
