TOKYO (AP)--Police armed with pistols and truncheons will fly on Japanese airlines for the first time during the upcoming soccer World Cup to guard against in-flight hooliganism, a newspaper reported Saturday.

Teams of two or more plainclothes officers will ride along on selected domestic and international flights during the May 31-June 30 tournament, which is being co-hosted by Japan and South Korea, the Asahi newspaper said.

The safeguard was agreed upon by Japanese police and the country's 12 air carriers, the paper said, citing sources close to the decision.

Destinations under consideration for flights with police guards include such Japanese World Cup venue cities as Osaka, Sapporo and Niigata, and the South Korean cities of Seoul and Busan, the Asahi newspaper said.
